Despite only being together just over a year, everyone seems to want a piece of local rock band Angel At My Table as they appear on the line-up for just about all the major festivals in Luxembourg: Food For Your Senses, Rock A Field, Rock un Knuedler, E-Lake and Terres Rouges. Once you listen to their music it’s not difficult to understand why.
A harmonious, bouncy, up-lifting rock sound with catchy tunes that are real crowd pleasers. That’s why their list of festival venues grows ever longer.
The band also recently released a four-track EP and from it the single “City Romance” which shot up the Luxembourg charts to stay at number 1 for 3 weeks.
It was at Food For Your Senses festival, after their performance that I sat Angel At My Table down on the grass behind the tent stage, and attempted a little interview.
The three guys, Joe, Tom and Adriel are no new-comers to the Luxembourg music scene having been in indie –rock band Javies for eight years. By creating Angel At My Table, they changed music style and recruited Joelle through Facebook with her spine-tingling vocals to produce the rich, bright sound they have today. “It was actually Facebook and YouTube, a friend of mine made a Facebook group for me where you can see YouTube videos and that’s where they found me” explained Joelle.
Before interviewing the band, I noted that they were somewhat bored by the question regarding the band name and how they settled on it, but I still posed the question querying whether it had anything to do with a book of the same name, “we’ve never seen this book before” was the reply however they did go on to explain that Irish band The Frames released a song entitled Angel At My Table and the name stuck.
When I asked whether the band preferred small or big venues, Tom replied “The best place is the place where people like your music”. A good answer! Although he did go on to explain that the bigger venues normally had better acoustics and sound systems.
“We do our own stuff but it is known to be ‘compared’ to Paramore, which is an honour, but we don’t copy” stated Adriel . Indeed it can be said that there are Paramore similarities, but if you create and rock band with 4 guys (1 guitarist, Jimmy was not present at the interview) and a female lead singer, then people are going to make comparisons whether it is merited or not, which is simply the nature of the beast.
Angel At My Table’s sound is definitely unique in Luxembourg and a band that could quite easily make it big and traverse the borders to be successful Europe and world-wide.
The band has agreed to keep in touch with Station and give us updates from time to time. I hope they’ll still do it when they’re rich and famous!
