Last night Ricky Gervais again hosted the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles, a slightly surprising move after the British comedian caused quite a controversy in the same role last year by offending an array of Hollywood stars. Gervais, 50, couldn't resist a few digs at the establishment though, opening the ceremony by telling the star-studded audience the Globes were "just like the Oscars... without all that esteem". He also poked fun at washed-up actor in the making Eddie Murphy as well as at Colin Firth, Kim Kardashian and Madonna.

The comedian, co-creator of The Office and Extras, said he was warned beforehand by the organisers of the event, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. "(They) warned me that if I insult anybody... they'll definitely have me back next year," he joked an went on further "They actually gave me a list of rules. I'm going to ignore them, but I thought it would be good to read them out. This is real, ok? No profanity. That's fine. I've got a huge vocabulary. No nudity. See, that's a shame. Because I've got a huge ... vocabulary. But a tiny penis. No, no. Doesn't matter. It works. Don't worry about it. It's fine."

Oh yeah, there were also awards given out... French silent movie The Artist got the Golden Globe for best comedy or musical and best score. Its main actor, Jean Dujardin, got the award for best actor in a comedy or musical.

The Descendants won the best movie award with George Clooney nabbing the award for best actor.

Meryl Streep was voted best female actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

The Golden Globe for the best foreign movie went to Iranian film A Separation.

The Golden Globes are considered a warm-up event for Hollywood's main awards ceremony, the Oscars, which takes place on 26 February.
