Today is Liichtmessdag!
Carnival season, or 'Fuesent' as they call it in Luxembourg, starts today with the annual celebration of Liichtmessdag!
This local tradition sees children making their way from doorbell to doorbell with colorful lit up lanterns of all different shapes and sizes, where they then sing the traditional Liichtmessdag song in return for treats. The symbolism behind this tradition is to bring light into the houses after a long and dark winter and to wish everyone good health for the rest of the year.
In one verse of the Luxembourgish Liichtmessdag song, children ask for 'bacon and peas' but the modern kids of today expect to get sweets or money. So make sure you've got some candy at home to give this evening!

The police have advised children to pay close attention to the traffic and to make sure that their lanterns are lit so that they are more visible. Parents should dress their children in bright clothing, assist them in small groups, stick to the left side of the road and, if possible, remain on the sidewalk.
Motorists are also being advised to be extra cautious on the roads tomorrow as there will be a lot of excited kids roaming the streets with their lanterns. Speed should be reduced, especially in villages!
