CLASS ACT: a night of one-act plays
Two of Luxembourg`s main English language theatre companies are teaming up to present a night of one-act plays.
Following the success of its productions of JANE EYRE in 2010 and “OPERA COMIQUE” in 2011, the BGT English Theatre Company will perform “CLASS ACT”, a new light drama by the Luxembourg-based writer Celeste Koehler, directed by Tony Kingston. The New World Theatre Club, whose recent productions include a 2010 sell-out production of “12 ANGRY MEN”, FEATS 2010 winner “JOLLY” and last year’s FEATS entry “THE DEVIL HIS DUE”, amongst others, will follow with three comedy pieces from David Ives’ renowned collection “ALL IN THE TIMING”, directed by Timothy Lone.
“CLASS ACT” is a light but searching look at the question of where acting stops and reality begins. Celia, a teenager, has decided to spend her summer holiday taking an acting class with the renowned PT Barron. Her mother, Ruth, is horrified by this … not just because of the cost, but also because her own mother, now seemingly suffering from dementia, was once an actress. Ruth’s life was ruined by her mother’s drinking and the immorality of the theatre world she lived in. Celia defies her mother and attends the acting class. But the class soon turns into a web of lies and half-truths which threaten Celia’s perception of what is real. Is everyone actually who they appear to be? Or are they all … including her own family... just playing roles? In this comic but poignant piece, the audience are confronted with questions about how much we are all acting, even in our private lives. Celeste Koehler, who has had several short plays produced in Luxembourg and the U.S., wrote “CLASS ACT” in 2010 especially for the BGT. This will be its premiere.
As part of the same program, The New World Theatre club will present three short plays from “ALL IN THE TIMING”, written by award-winning American playwright David Ives. All three pieces deal with people surmounting the obstacles of language to find romance. In English Made Simple, a young man and woman meet at a party and their immediate romantic attraction is presented over a loudspeaker, while they struggle to free themselves from the banal constrictions of party talk. In Sure Thing, a man and a woman meet for the first time in a cafe, where they have an awkward meeting. Their conversation is continually reset each time they say the wrong thing, until, finally, they romantically connect. In Universal Language a man and a woman fall in love while communicating in the invented language “Unnamunda”. David Ives was in the mid-nineties the most produced playwright after Shakespeare and “ALL IN THE TIMING” is one of his most popular and successful collections of plays.
