Police issue carnival road warnings
Extra road blocks and additional patrols to be expected, starting 17 February.
Carnival, like the Schueberfouer, is a huge event in Luxembourg. As is customary for this annual period of costumes, binge drinking, dreadful music and general silliness, traffic police will be reinforcing their presence throughout the country in a fight against all traffic offenses, notably drunk driving and excessive speed.
Police are stressing that by no means do they want to take on the role of killjoys during this time, especially as many off-duty policeman are known to attend the carnival parties and partake in the same level of alcohol consumption as other revelers.

Police have issued a few pieces of advice for motorists, which could save everybody a lot of problems during the carnival period, starting with the obvious one:
- Don't drink and drive!
- Choose a designated driver who will stay sober the whole night.
- Know that more people than usual will be out and about, especially at night. Binge drinking is more frequent and the level of enjoyment often reduces the level caution
- During this time of the year, roads are often frozen and driving conditions are made more difficult through frequent fog
- Watch your speed, it's the most common cause for deadly accidents
- Before leaving your house, check weather reports and road safety updates in the media
- Don't drive if you're tired
- Stay concentrated when driving, don't have the volume of the sound system up too high
- Stay calm, don't drive aggressively
- Never overtake if you're not sure about oncoming traffic
- It's better to give way when one has priority, instead of insisting on it in a dangerous situation
