4 Hollerich bars lose late licence

Mayor Xavier Bettel fed up with bad security record of bars, more police at weekends.

The latest mass brawl at the weekend was the straw that broke the camel's back. After a final warning to improve the safety around their establishments didn't sink in completely, four notorious late-night bars at the top end of Rue de Hollerich have now had their late licences revoked. Nexus, D-Code, Jah-Bar and Hangover Bar will all have to close at 3am instead of 6am during the next three months. After this transition period, City officials will re-examine their case. Mayor Xavier Bettel seems to have become frustrated with the lack of progress concerning the security in and around these neighbouring bars.

Around 6am last Sunday, a particularly violent mass brawl broke out on the big Hollerich car park opposite the four bars in question. Police called to the scene were kicked and punched by the drunk and aggressive crowd. Even though this car park is also used by patrons of the many other bars further down Rue de Hollerich, the police report, seen by City officials, says clearly that this particular crowd came from the four bars in question, as all the other establishments were long closed by that time.

On the same note, police announced on Tuesday evening, that in light of recent events and yesterday's decision by mayor Bettel, there will be a bigger police presence in Rue de Hollerich as of this Friday. Officers with police dogs will also be on patrol when most bars close around 3am.
