4 out of 10 Luxembourg drivers admit to drink driving
In a recent survey by AXA, 4 out of 10 drivers admit drinking more than 2 glasses of alcohol before driving and nearly all phone without using handsfree kit, respecting distances or overtaking on the inside on motorways.
Luxembourg motorists are well aware of the dangers of driving too close to the car in front and telephoning while driving. But this knowledge is at odds with the behavior they actually admit.
This is according to an AXA-Road Safety report carried out in 10 European countries including Luxembourg, where 800 drivers were surveyed from 16 to 29 June last year.
Seven Luxembourg residents out of ten feel safe on the roads. A somewhat misguided sense when you take into account he significant increase in serious accidents and road deaths in 2009. This is in line with the survey behavior response.
Four in ten admit to driving having consumed more than two glasses of alcohol. Almost all state that they phone without using a handsfree kit, overtaking (or rather undertaking) on the right on the motorway, indicating as an option, or not respecting the distance with the car in front.
However despite these results, they are less likely to cite the two main causes of serious accidents and fatalities: alcohol and speeding, the offences that most often resulted in withdrawals of points, or driving licence.
Luxembourg drivers seem to to have 2 “faces”. Despite their somewhat laxidasical approach , they are more sensitive than the European average in the importance of prevention, stated Nathalie Hanck in charge of communications at AXA.
It is interesting that despite the underestimation of the role of alcohol, one driver in two demands more awareness to the risks associated with drinking and driving.
And nearly six in ten motorists in Luxembourg say they even favour a law prohibiting driving after any alcohol consumption.
