Size matters for Belval chimneys
The two old giant chimneys in Belval will not be so giant soon as plans are afoot to shrink them down to 40 metres due to fears that they could collapse if left in their current state.
It appears that the 2 industrial chimneys in Belval that were due to be left as monuments, need to be made smaller.
They were build in 1969 and 1972 and are 75 and 115 metres tall. However due to recent weather conditions and deterioration, it is feared that they could collapse, or partially collapse if left in their present state and at their current height.
It has therefore been decided that they should be no higher than 40 metres which will reduce their size massively rendering them somewhat less impressive.
Work should take place at the foot of the two chimneys soon and a security perimeter has already been established, where the future Belval School will be built. The Square Mile and the Park Belval are also in the area.
The reduction of the chimneys' size will start by early summer. By making them smaller they will become more secure. However a cost to do this has been quoted at 1 million euros.
