"Dual nationality is a good tool for us to be citizens while preserving our Portuguese culture” stated José Coimbra, president of the Confederation of the Portuguese Community (CCPL). "But for what we get in return we believe the language requirements for access are exaggerated."

The CCPL want the diplomas for Luxembourg language courses to replace the language test to apply for dual nationality. "Speaking in Luxembourg is difficult in an environment where there are few opportunities," says José Coimbra. "The understanding in order to participate in politics is quite another thing."

Rethinking language tests was one of the main demands of the action program voted by the hundreds of delegates that assembled yesterday in Cessange. A message they have also passed on to a number of political guests, trade unions and associations.

Another major concern of the community: one third of students of Portuguese origin fail school exams. Hence the call to create a department in Luxembourg schools which will  "make life easier" for students of foreign origin.

The action program from the meeting will be translated into French and submitted to the government.
