Workers at a road construction site in Berbourg got a surprise on Monday when they discovered not one but 31 grenades!

The grenades were identified as the type used by the Germany army during the Second World War and had been hiding under tarmac for almost 70 years.  Their unearthing presented a potential danger.

In total 30 mortar grenades and one white phosphorous grenade were discovered, and the site was closed on Tuesday while it was searched for other possible munitions lurking underground.

If it had been a demolition site, the grenades could have proved handy!
