No this is not the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra playing Megadeth’s greatest hits.  Nor is it just metal instruments being played.

It is in fact Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra’s homage to Luxembourg’s steel industry, on Thursday 11th March at 10:30am

The concert played together with big screen projections,  is aimed at the young and older and is being performed in Echternach at Centre Culturel, Touristique et de Congrès, known as Trifolion, a new centre for culture, society and conventions of the town of Echternach, the eastern part of Luxembourg as well as the cross-border region.

This Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg concert is a musical homage to the steel industry, which has been the driving force of the Luxembourgish economy for centuries. This theme, among others, is musically depicted through the pounding sound of Arthur Honegger´s great steam engine Pacific 231 as well as the wild and glowing music of Mossolov´s spectacular composition “Die Eisengießerei – the iron foundry”.

The concerts are not only about the melodious translation of metallic and mechanical sounds but are also about the formative influence the steel industry has on Luxembourg.

Two pedagogic projects are integrated in the concerts: Students of the Echternach Lyzeus, under the direction of the young composer Ivan Bouman are creating a sound composition, which musically represents the different stations of a steel plant. The second project is based on scrap metal. Apprentices from the ArcelorMittal Training Centre in Differdingen are forming sculptures using discarded metal. This process is guided by two artists, Misch Feinen and Jhang Meis and is captured in a video documentation that is presented in the concert.
