Luxembourg plans to boost internet speeds

100 megabits for 2015. That's the internet speed for Luxembourg quoted by Francois Biltgen Minister of Communications, climbing to 1 Giga thereafter.

“High speed internet access is on its way to Luxembourg and not to be missed”  was  the message on Tuesday from Jeannot Krecke, Minister of Economy and François Biltgen, Minister of Communications.

In a press conference Biltgen stated "Luxembourg will have networks of at least 100 Megabits by 2015, however this is only the first step towards high speed connections as we plan to establish a speed of  up to 1 Giga at a later stage”.

This will be welcome news for many as the Luxembourg average connection speed is not the greatest in Europe and lags way behind Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, France and Germany amongst others.  A jump to 100 Megabits would leapfrog just about every country to put the Grand Duchy right at the top of the list above South Korea and Japan. That is of course, if other countries stand still in their technology.

The aim of the campaign is to cater for more ever-growing businesses in Luxembourg as well as the demanding public.  The current infrastructure on existing networks, needs an overhaul.

The cost of the proposed upgrade has not yet been determined, but the methods of how it will be done are known   "Once the infrastructure work starts in the country, we will take advantage to develop future connections,"  said François Biltgen. And for that we pass through the network of P & T or the network Luxconnect”.  Luxconnect is an extensive fibre optic network that was set up in 2009 in Luxembourg.

With this faster connection technology, Luxembourg hopes to appear much higher up in the list of countries regarding internet connection speed and hopefully attracting internet-reliant business to the Grand Duchy.

The problem is, other countries have similar plans meaning that by the time Luxembourg, “gets up to speed” it may not quite be the improvement predicted today.  However, it is good news all the same.
