Happy Birthday Vel'oh!
21 March 2010 marks the 2nd Anniversary of Luxembourg City’s self-service bicycle system
On Thursday 18 March, François Bausch, first alderman of the City of Luxembourg in charge of mobility, was pleased to review the progress of this successful project at a press conference at the "Op der Auer" vel’oh station by the roundabout rue Gasperich/J Street Gutenberg in Gasperich.
On 21 March 2010, the self-service bicycle system vel'oh! will celebrate its 2nd anniversary, an event accompanied by a new wave of network expansion. In order to meet the great demand from more and more users wishing to move across town using vel'oh!, two additional districts have been added to the network, namely Gasperich and Weimershof. With these 7 new stations from this month there are now 54 stations providing a total of 496 bikes.
Mr. Bausch is happy to announce, “Since its launch, the vel'oh! system has proved a huge success and today we count 4,021 long-term subscribers in comparison to the 2,910 registered subscribers counted in March 2009.” There have been 260,000 rentals in total and another impressive statistic is that users have travelled more than one million kilometres since the introduction of the vel'oh!
The strong growth in demand shows that this simple, economical and ecological urban means of travel has been integrated ideally in the concept of sustainable mobility of Luxembourg City. Among many other efforts, this success has been achieved through the City’s development and expansion of the network of bicycle paths that help promote cycling in the city.
