You may remember that we announced in late April, forthcoming roadworks in the Howald Tunnel on the A1, which will cause big problems for motorists ...

If you drive along the A1 to and from work and don't use public transport, then much of your time is likely to be spent sitting in traffic jams in the coming months.

Howald Tunnel on A1 motorway between Gasperich and Kirchberg, will be partially closed for 4 months for maintenance, and the start date for the tunnel roadworks is 28th June.

We now have more information concerning the forthcoming maintenance plans:

Every A1 driver is concerned!

The tunnel, built in 1994, no longer meets safety standards and is in need of a little rejuvenation. However this renovation will cause major problems for motorists who are currently 60,000 passing through the tunnel tubes every day. Traffic jams could even extend to other motorways, given the size of the road network in the Grand Duchy.

Alternative Routes

The Minister of Sustainable Development, Claude Wiseler is well aware of the problems and seeks to find alternative routes in case of traffic jams or even accidents.

Some access roads onto the A1 motorway from the A3 will be doubled with extra lanes to avoid traffic jams forming on the A3, at the Croix de Gasperich in particular. An additional lane will also be added in the direction of Belgium on the A6 and in the direction of Esch-sur-Alzette on the A4.

See the roadworks and traffic jams in real time!

The Ministry of Sustainable Development has launched a website enabling you to follow live views of traffic on the roads affected by the maintenance work via webcam. This means you are able to see traffic coming from Belgium (A6), Germany (A1) or France (A3).
In addition, you'll find many tips to reduce congestion and other road inconveniences.

The website is: http://tunnel.cita.lu

If you have the opportunity during these four months of “chaos” on the motorways, it is advisable to use public transport, maybe carpool, use the P & R, or aim to avoid driving during rush hours.

Here is a timetable of the roadworks:

Maintenance details:

    * 15th and 16th June: road marking will be updated and illuminated signs set up.

    * 26th and 27th June A1 motorway will be closed in both directions

    * From 28th June to 30th August - Work in the tunnel in the direction of Trier will take place meaning that traffic will be diverted to the other side of the motorway (reducing the A1 down to a single lane in each direction).

The motorway will then be closed in both directions while maintenance equipment is moved from one side of the tunnel to the other.

2nd phase: Tunnel fromTrier direction to Gasperich closed

    * 6th September to 11th October: maintenance takes place in the tunnel in the direction of Gasperich meaning that traffic will be diverted to the other side of the motorway (reducing the A1 down to a single lane in each direction).

    * From 12th to 19th November: Removal of maintenance equipment, removing road markings and dismantling road signs , but no details of road closures currently available for this time.

Happy motoring!
