Luxembourg is a car paradise! And that statement is backed up by the latest figures released yesterday by SNCT (Société nationale des contrôles techniques). In six months, no fewer than 37,242 new vehicles were registered, bringing the number of vehicles in circulation in the Grand Duchy to 400,952.

While in January 2010, the Grand Duchy had only 392,885 vehicles, by the end of July this figure rose to 400,952 cars showing an increase of 8,067 vehicles.

A figure boosted by bonus schemes?

This is a particularly important figure compared to 2009 where during the same period only 30,789 vehicles were destined for private use. It is certain that the green car scheme, CAR-e Plus, scrapped on 31 July, and related scheme Premium CAR-e, do contribute greatly to the figures.

Since 1 January 2009, 3,200 applications for the car scrapping scheme (CAR-e Plus) were granted by the Ministry of Sustainable Development. However, these figures are provisional, since cars registered in 2010 have not yet been taken into account. 8,900 requests for the ecological premium have been recorded since its introduction on 1 January 2008.

Luxembourg still loves German cars!

If we take a closer look at the car brands preferred by Luxembourg residents we still see German cars at the top of the popularity list: 446 Volkswagen, 446 BMW and 437 Audi cars were registered in Luxembourg.

Next in the list of car popularity comes Peugeot 381, Hyundai 342, Renault 324, Mercedes 322, Ford 284, Citroën 272 and Opel 158.

It is not surprising to see that five luxury cars enter into circulation since July: two Ferraris, a Lamborghini and two Rolls Royce.
