Triathlon: Gold medal for Luxembourg at Small Nations championship
Luxembourg athletes shine at the 11th edition of the Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe.
Luxembourg's Max Biewer obtained a gold medal in the individual Triathlon race, held on Sunday held for the first time in the Principality of Liechtenstein.
Consisting of a swim: 750m; bike: 20km and run: 5km the 14 year-old Luxembourger won in a time of 59m:17s.
In the women's category Diane Chelius and Myriam Reuland finished third and fourth respectively (1hr:08m:03s, 1hr:11m:15s) and it is interesting to note that Diane Chelius won the first two editions of these championships which were held in Malta in 2000 and 2001.
There was also a medal win in the team event. Seven teams from Liechtenstein (2), Luxembourg (2), Cyprus (1), San Marino (1) and Malta (1) lined up for the start of the team event which consisted of Swim: 200m; Bike: 2km and Run: 1km.
Each team comprised three athletes, with the middle athlete being a woman, and each athlete had to perform the whole race before tagging his/her partner. The Maltese team won the event in an overall time of 36m:41s, just 19 seconds ahead of second placed Luxembourg and 1m:32s ahead of 3rd placed Liechtenstein.
Luxembourg hosted the event in 2008.
