Luxembourg and Czech Rep. issue commemorative coin
To commemorate the 700th anniversary of the marriage of John of Luxembourg with Bohemian royal daughter Elizabeth Premyslid, a special coin has been released.
The Czech and Luxembourg central banks have today put into circulation a silver coin commemorating the 700th anniversary of the marriage of John of Luxembourg (1296-1346) and the Bohemian royal daughter Elizabeth Premyslid (1292-1330) Wednesday.
Jan of Luxembourg became king of Bohemia through the marriage and Elizabeth Premyslid became queen.
The coin was designed by Jakub Vlcek who also designed the 700 euro cent commemorative coin (The Czech coin to the nominal value of 200 crowns) issued in Luxembourg, was presented by Miroslav Singer, governor of the Czech National Bank (CNB), in the Royal Hall of Krivoklat Castle, central Bohemia, yesterday (Wednesday). Yves Mersch, governor of the Luxembourg Central Bank, Czech Cardinal Miloslav Vlk and Luxembourg ambassador to the Czech Republic Jean Faltz were present at the ceremony.
The reverse side of the coin features stylised figures of John of Luxembourg and Elizabeth Premyslid entering into marriage against a Gothic background. The text "Marriage of John of Luxembourg and Elizabeth Premyslid" and the years 1310-2010 line the coin's edge.
The Czech coin has a stylised Medieval-shaped Czech lion against a Gothic background on the face side, the Luxembourg coin features a portrait of the Grand Duke (image not available).
Both coins were made in the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou, located in north Bohemia.
3,000 Luxembourg commemorative coins will be minted in proof quality only.
